November's Orbit of Excellence Award Winners

Pictured are the Orbit of Excellence Award winners for the month of November. The trait for this month was integrity. We are so proud of the kiddos! To celebrate, the administrators cook pancakes for the students while we read the blurb that their teacher wrote about why they are deserving of the award. It's so much fun getting to celebrate and highlight the awesomeness of our students!

Immersion Program Lottery

Rose Hill has a dual-language immersion program and if you are interested, or know someone who is, you are going to want to mark some dates on your calendar. The lottery system and timeline is outlined here.

  • Applications for the grade 1 lottery is open from January 13, 2025-February 13, 2025.
  • Applications for the kindergarten lottery is open from January 13, 2025-March 6, 2025.
  • An informational meeting will be held at Rose Hill, in-person, January 27th at 6pm. If you cannot attend this meeting, there are many more being held throughout the county and full list of them can be found here.

Navigating the immersion lottery program can be challenging and we are here to help. If you have questions, please email Ms. Edwards, Principal, or give her a call, or connect with her through Talking Points. She's more than happy to talk you through the process.

Pie in the Face Festivities!

Because the PTA Fun Run fundraising goal was met, the administrators received many, many pies in the face just prior to winter break. It provided a lot of the fun for the kids and teachers as they were able to throw a pie in whichever administrator's face they wanted. It was great fun! Thank you for working so hard to raise money for our PTA and school, which will ultimately support our students.

Rose Hill Families,

As winter break approaches, we hope that it is a safe and restful time for our students and families, and we acknowledge that long breaks might cause stress and changes to routine. Formed Families Forward is an organization that provides free training to families and caregivers with strategies to use with their children to support social emotional health. For this upcoming winter break, Formed Families Forward will be offering a new training for parents and caregivers to boost family safety and wellness to help prepare for all the excitement and disruptions of your children’s break from school and their expectations for winter holiday celebrations. Join them for an interactive workshop with a light meal and get new strategies for managing the winter break and for starting the new year strong. Formed Families Forward will host this training on Monday, December 16 from 11:45-1 with a free light lunch and from 6:45-8pm with a free light dinner at Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wyth St., Alexandria, VA 22314. Families and caregivers can register at the link here. Simultaneous Spanish language interpretation is available upon request.

RHES Book Fair is this Week!

The annual book fair is taking place this week. Students will come to the library to fill out a "wish list" and then they will have the opportunity to buy their books. The fair will be open late Tuesday, December 10th from 4:15-7:00pm.

The easiest way to pay for books is to set up an eWallet account for your child. Here is the link to a document that should answer any questions you may have about the eWallet.

Volunteers are still needed! If you volunteers, you will received 20% off of your purchase. Check the sign-up sheet to see if there are any time slots that you might be able to help out.

If you have questions about the book fair, email librarian Mrs. Millett at [email protected].

PTA Updates

Spring Enrichment: We are finalizing courses for the PTA-Sponsored After-School Spring Enrichment program and will share that information soon. In the meantime, we are able to share that the dates for the Spring Enrichment program are 2/24-4/10 and class times will be 4:15-5:15 pm. We will need volunteers, so please send a message to [email protected] if you are interested. Volunteers who can commit to at least 8 days during the 6-week session will receive one PTA-paid seat in one enrichment class for one child.

As you may have heard, this year's Fun Run raised over $25,000!! This money will be used for things like buses for field trips, enrichment program scholarships, Staff Appreciation Week, etc. Some of the money will be used for school improvements approved by membership in November's budget vote. The first of these improvements, resurfacing 12 white boards in the upstairs classrooms, will take place over winter break. The teachers are incredibly thankful to be able to use a smooth, whiteboard surface daily. While it seems relatively minor, it's going to make a huge difference! Thank you for your generosity!

New RHES Office Team Member

This week, Rose Hill welcomed Michael Butler to the office team. Mr. Butler is excited to work in a school environment where he sees his role as crucial piece of the puzzle ensuring teachers, students, and parents are supported. Next time you are in the office, please introduce yourself and welcome Michael!

Jack of All Trades

One of the things Ms. Edwards, our school principal, values the most is the early mornings. It's when the building is quiet and you'll often find her tinkering on various projects when she needs to get out from behind the computer.

Friday morning, a team member was surprised to walk into the mod to see her installing door stops on the 2nd grade classroom doors; and that is when this photo was snapped. ☺️

Literacy Resources for Families

Are you looking for ways to help support your student with literacy at home? FCPS has published several resources that are specific to reading and writing. You can find them here

The Benchmark curriculum is what we are using to instruction students in all aspects of literacy and if you would like to know what your child is learning each quarter, you may find this resource helpful.

Winter Coat Donation

Last week, Kate Pennington, received Summit Church's annual donation of new winter coats for our students. They arrived just in time for the chilly weather! Rose Hill has strong partnerships with many community organizations and we appreciate the various ways that they support our students and families.

PTA Updates

1,2,3,4...We Declare a Penny War!!!

December 2nd-13th, students can fill their grade's water jug (located in the front lobby) with coins before and after school. Pennies, other coins, and bills ($1-$20) collected in the jugs earn points. The grade level with the most points after two weeks wins 1st place!

Looking for a way to keep the kids entertained over the holidays? Need a great gift idea? Dave & Buster's has you covered! Beginning on November 22nd, for every Dave and Buster's $20 Power Card purchased using the QR code located in this flyer, $10 will be donated back to Rose Hill PTA. It's a win/win! Last date to order is January 22, 2025.

We are Thankful for YOU!

Thursday's Harvest Luncheon was a tremendous success with just over 500 adults in attendance! This was the largest turnout in years and the watching the students eat with their parents gave everyone great joy!

Mrs. Miller, Asst. Principal, coordinated this event and decorated the cafeteria with the help of Linda Layton, our Administrative Assistant.

It was so busy that we only managed to get one photo, which was a picture of the kitchen team before the event started. They did a great job keeping the line moving and ensuring everyone had a great feast!

Enrichment Programs at Rose Hill

Did you know that we have had morning enrichment programs at Rose Hill this fall? Mrs. Olin, parent and PTA member, brought this idea to the school administrative team last spring and has been instrumental in getting it off the ground. Eight classes have been offered which range in intrests from science to Legos to crocheting. It is a combination of vendors and RHES team members that offer courses.

If you are interested in possibly signing your child up for an enrichment class, stay tuned for more information. They will start in February and be held after school. Volunteers are intregral to making these programs run so please consider giving your time an hour or two a week.

Family Engagment Month

November is National Family Engagement Month! This month reminds us that families are children's first and most importatn teacher, advocates, and nurtures. Below are some fun ideas on how families can be engaged with thier children's learning and growth:

  • Join your school's PTA!
  • Plan a day with no electronics. Consider books, games, or puzzles.
  • Listent o and discuss different types of music with your child
  • Put a note into your child's backpack or lunch box as a token of encouragement.
  • Talkto your child about his/ her favorite subject in school
  • Flip through old family photos and tell stories about your family's history
  • Prepare a meal together as a family
  • Visit your local library or go online to get a library card for your child. All FCPS students can have a card of their own!
  • Practice digital safety and responsibility with your child. Ideas and tip sheets.

Flexibility was the name of the game today!

We are so proud of how flexible our students were to the changes that were made today for the Fun Run. Our PTA volunteers and staff worked tirelessly all day to make it a memorable experience for all students. As our earlier message noted, for safety reasons we switched to a dance-a-thon party this morning for our preschool-3rd grades. As the weather improved, we kept an eye on the field and decided conditions had changed and we were able to have our 4th-6th grades do the Fun Run outside. It was a great day of fun, laughter and movement!

Character Day at Rose Hill!

So much fun was had by staff and students at Thursday's Book Character Day! Thank you to everyone who participated. Pictured above are our teaching teams and their costumes. They definitely went all out!

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

Hayfield Pyramid Strings Concert

Over 20 students represented Rose Hill at Wednesday evenings Hayfield Pyramid strings concert. The students joined over 100 other elementary students from throughout the pyramid. Together, they learned a song and then performed it together. They even dressed up in costumes! Thank you to Mrs. Babb, our strings teacher, for supporting our students in this endeavor.

Rose Hill Stellar Squads

This past month, Rose Hill initiated Stellar Squads. Stellar Squads are classrooms that are partnered together, usually an upper grade with a lower grade, and for about an hour, they have an opportunity to connect. The goal is for the older students to see how important their role is an older Rocket and to model the Rose Hill expectations, feel good about helping younger Rockets, and to hopefully, through the course of the year, develop strong relationships. The same squads are partnered throughout the year and will get together once a month. Be sure to ask your student about their Stellar Squad experience that took place Thursday afternoon!

Upcoming Events
  • Monday, 11/04 - School Planning Day, No School
  • Monday, 11/04 - Deadline to nominate a Rose Hill team member for an Outstanding Employee Award

RHES Book Character Day!

Book Character Day will be held Thursday, October 31st. Rose Hill teams do a wonderful job choosing themes such as the 101 Dalmations and we want the students to join us!

Students may dress up as their favorite book character for the day. It is important to note that anything that looks like a weapon, such as a sword, gun, bow & arrow (even if they are made from plastic or foam), should not be brought to school. You may also want to consider packing an extra pair of shoes or clothes for your kiddos should their costume get uncomfortable during the day.

This is such a fun day and we also want to keep everyone safe. If you have questions, contact your child's teacher.

Rose Hill Garden Harvest

The Rose Hill garden continues to produce a variety of vegetables. Earlier this week, Ms. Edwards picked cherry tomatoes and hot peppers (which are super hot!). Mr. Jose, our Assistant Building Supervisor, takes great pride in the planting and watering of the plants. In addition, he makes a great salsa from the vegetables he picks!

Family Life Education Parent Information Session

The Edison Pyramid is hosting an opportunity for parents in all grades to preview the Family Life Education (FLE) lessons. The meeting will be held via Zoom, link is in the poster below.

The FLE is taught by the classroom teachers and covers a slew of topics. If you cannot attend the information session but are wanting to read more about the content of the lessons, you can click here.

Parents do have the option to opt-out their students from the lessons. The opt-out form is availble in the Parent Digital Consent (PDC). If you need help accessing this, please contact Yudi Del Castillo, the Rose Hill Registrar, at 703-313-4200.

Rose Hill Players Auditions - DATE CHANGE

The Rose Hill Players is a tradition that heading into its 34th year! It is supported by the PTA and led by a group of teachers in the building and many, many parent volunteers. It's truly a wonderful and long-standing tradition that provides great memories for our students.

If you have a child in grades 2-5 that would like to audition for the upcoming play, auditions will be held Monday, October 28th at 5:30 in the Rose Hill library. This is a date change from Wednesday, October 23rd. Please update your calendars. Students need to make sure to pick up an audition packet outside of Mr. Adams classroom.

If you have questions, you can email [email protected]

PTA Updates

PTA Membership Update:

Before we get into all of the updates, we just want to share some membership information:

  • Membership does not automatically renew each year.
  • If you haven't yet purchased a membership, please click here and select the membership level that is right for you. (Fees are as low as $10.61 for the school year.)

Some have asked what PTA membership provides.

    • Advocating for our students and school

For Students:

  • The PTA funds and supports
    • Field Trips
    • Before and After School Enrichment Programing
    • Scholarship
    • Grade Level Community Building
    • School Improvements that Impact Student Learning

Fall Before-School Enrichment Program Update:

The PTA-Sponsored Fall Enrichment Program is currently serving 68 students. However, we see 81 students enter through door 2 each week as some of our students take more than one class. With the generous support of our members, the PTA was able to offer 13 scholarships totaling $1,440 this fall to families currently receiving free or reduced lunch.

This program would not be possible without our amazing parent volunteers. We want to thank the below parents for stepping in to make sure the kids get to their enrichment classes safely each week:

Ashley Burris, Beverly Coakley, Louise Dohou, Natalie Donohue, Hanna Haile, Dianna Lopez, Jennifer Olin, Lily Puentes, Vic Puentes, Austin Spence, and Haley Spence

PTA Meeting Updates:

At the September 9th PTA meeting, we presented the proposed PTA budget for the school year. The budget will be voted on by the membership at the next PTA Meeting to be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 6:30 PM (online).

Rose Hill 2024 Health and Wellness Expo

The Health and Wellness Expo was a huge success! Thanks to Kate Pennington our family liaison and Allison DeGregorio our school social worker for putting on such a great event!

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your family's health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. Be wise and immunize!

Free Immunizations for All FCPS Students

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations at Frost Middle School for all FCPS students at no cost on:

  • Tuesday, October 8,  3-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic.

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent.  Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school.  Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by email to [email protected].

Gun Safety and Safe Gun Storage

Providing students and staff with a safe educational environment remains our priority. Sadly, gun violence continues to impact schools and communities across our nation.

In FCPS, lessons on gun safety are built into our curriculum. It is critical that parents and guardians talk to their children about the importance of gun safety and safe gun storage in their homes, and in any home they may visit.

The FCPS website has gun safety resources as well as information about safety and security practices at schools. See Dr. Reid’s recent letter to the community for more resources.

Safely Store Firearms and Medications

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board has a limited supply of free locking medication boxes and trigger locks that fit a wide variety of firearms. Visit the Lock and Talk website to learn more.

✨ The 2023-30 Strategic Plan

The 2023-30 strategic plan sets five main goals to create positive change in FCPS. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Each goal has an equity commitment — the promise we make to every student to support them in attaining these goals. Each goal also has several measures that allow us to track our progress.

Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12

The first goal in the strategic plan focuses on each and every student having a strong start in FCPS. Whether they're joining us in preschool or in high school, we want our students to be set up for success. See how Goal 1 is being put into practice

Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, Empowered

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services' updates to lunch menus align with FCPS’ Strategic Plan Goal #2 - Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered. The new menu options reflect the many voices and cultures represented around every FCPS lunch table!

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

As part of the second goal, we want each and every student to feel like they belong and have the support they need to thrive. See how Goal 2 is being put into practice
