Board of Supervisor Lusk Visits RHES

Mr. Rodney Lusk, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for Lee District, came to visit Rose Hill Friday afternoon. This was a great opportunity for Supervisor Lusk to meet various members of the Rose Hill team, interact with the students, and see our building. In the picture above, he spent some time doing a Q&A with Mrs. Malone's second grade classroom. He also visited a few other classrooms sharing what his job is, where he grew up, and some kiddos even asked how tall he is! Ms. Edwards shared with him the importance of trying to get a playground that is truly accessible for all of our students. She was advocating that if the mulch could be replaced with soft tile, that would be a great start to ensuring that all of our students can play on the playground. We'll see if that can come to fruition! We are very appreciative of Supervisor Lusk for making time in his schedule to visit our awesome Rockets!

6th Grade All-County Choral Festival

Saturday afternoon, Rose Hill had two 6th graders participate in the All-County Choral Festival. Andrew and Ari represented our school.

This event has over 650 6th graders from across the county that come together the Friday before with a guest conductor to rehearse the music and then Saturday is the performance. The music is absolutely fabulous and such a spectacular event!

Mr. Postman and Mrs. Bartley, RHES music teachers, are an intregal part in making this happen. A special thank you to them for providing our students with this opportunity!

Thank you!

We had just over 450 parents come Thursday to eat lunch with their students for the Swing into Spring Luncheon. Thank you so much for attending. The smiles on the students' faces was amazing and after lunch, the children had a little extra pep-in-their-step. One young child remarked to Ms. Edwards, "I like that my mom can see where I have to go to work everyday." 😊

Robotics at Rose Hill

To make our master schedule work, Rose Hill provides a Robotics class to our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. The class takes place once a week and is taught by Mrs. Masters, our School Based Technology Specialist. This class is not required by FCPS and our local school budget pays for the materials and supplies. What you see in the pictures above may look like the regular Legos, but they are Legos that use a single board computing device, motor, and other items that can be programmed to do certain things. Think of it as play with a very distinct purpose. The students get extremely creative and excited bringing their creations to life!

Yearbook Order Deadline Extended

We have extended the deadline to place your order for the 2023-2024 yearbook. Cost is $14 and the deadline to order is April 19th. To order, follow the directions below.

There will be a very small number of yearbooks (less than 20) that will be available to purchase in June. We highly suggest that if you want a yearbook for your student, order it now!

SEPTA is a PTA affilitated with Fairfax County Councils of PTAs and advocates for students with disabilities. This year, several Rose Hill team members were nominated for awards. The awards ceremony will be held May 11th and we are excited to see if we are able to win some of the 15 categories.

March Madness...Rose Hill Style!

Do you know who Jiji is? Jiji is the famous penguin on ST Math and every March, Mrs. Rubertone, our Math Resource Teacher, facilitates March Madness for all of the classes to complete head-to-head to see who can win the coveted Jiji Trophy. In order to do this, classes need to complete math puzzles and this year, Mrs. Ruthenburg's Kindergarten class took the trophy. Their hard work paid off! Congratulations!

FCPS Family Engagement Survey

Parents/caregivers should have received an email invitation with a unique survey link from K12 Insight on March 3. The subject line was: FCPS Family Engagement Survey. Check your junk mail to see if the survey message landed here.

Here is a general survey link that families can use to take the survey. Thank you!

A note about bringing food to RHES...

Food allergies are more prevalent than ever and if you are a parent of a child that has one or many food allergies, you trust that the school will keep your child safe. Of course, Rose Hill does their absolute best but this is why we ask parents to make arrangements with the classroom teacher PRIOR to a birthday or other celebration. When food is dropped off without prior notification, we have to take into consideration as to whether or not it has ingredients that might pose a potential hazard to a classmate and then if it does, we do not have a food substitution on-hand so then we run into some students being able to enjoy the treat while others cannot. We share this information so that you know why we ask for food items being brought in to be coordinated and why the office team may ask you if the teacher is aware that the food is coming in. We know that everyone wants to keep our students safe is this is one way we can ensure that that happens!

Summer Camps and Family Resource Center Information

A note from Ms. Edwards, Principal

Not long ago, I had the pleasure of meeting up with these former Rose Hill Rockets. These kiddos are now in middle school and were helping out with the Rose Hill Players into the early evening of a school night. I offered them a piece of candy and they spent a good bit of time hanging out in my office catching up and looking at the photos on my wall. It made my heart so happy to hear how well these young ladies are doing!

Once a Rocket, always a Rocket!

I share this to say that while we gear up to close the school building for a week for spring break, I wish everyone a safe and restful few days off of school. Please encourage your kids to get outside, play, ride a bike, make a craft, or do something besides play with technology. If you are traveling, be safe, and enjoy wherever you might be going.

The school office will be closed during the week and we are encouraging our team to step away from their computers too so if you send them an email, they will respond to you upon their return in early April.

Let's have a great week of learning and I hope your family enjoys the upcoming break!

Ms. Edwards, Principal

Preschoolers take a trip to the Smithsonian

This past Wednesday, our youngest Rockets ventured to the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum and they had a great time! The Smithsonian hosted a special program specifically designed for youger learners and not only did our students have fun, they experience quite a few hands-on activities. Thank you to the Preschool team that coordinated this event and the parents who chaperoned.

Author Visits 2nd Graders!

Author Carylee Carrington recently visited the 2nd grade classrooms where she read her most recent book, Everyone Just Like Me. Carylee lives in the area and became and "accidental author" because she wanted to ensure her own two children would have access to diverse literature. This is the second year that Rose Hill has hosted her and we are looking to doing so for many more years to come!

The Baltimore National Aquarium was visited by our 5th graders this past week. This is a yearly trip that the 5th graders look forward to, not only because they are able to see all types of sea creatures but also because they take charted busses, which is kind of a big deal! The students spent the day exploring the aquarium and even the gift shop. Thank you to the 5th grade team for coordinating this event, the parents that were able to chaperone, and to everyone who was able to drop their students off early and pick them up later in the day. We know these schedule changes can be challenging but we appreciate you making this happen for the kids!

Rose Hill Administrators Help Recruit Teachers

Last Saturday, the Rose Hill Administrative Team helped to recruit and interview teachers as they came to see what jobs were available within Fairfax County Public Schools. The job fair was held at Lake Braddock Secondary School and there were several hundred candidates that came to see where they might be a best fit. It was a great opportunity to meet new people and share how FCPS is a great place to work!

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Kindergarten Orientation for Rose Hill will be held April 2nd at 1:00pm in school library. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

This year, Virginia will celebrate Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 17. Purple Up! Day is a special day for communities to come together and wear purple as a visible gesture of support for our military-connected youth and their families. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military.

It has been a busy few weeks at Rose Hill with band and strings concerts, GLOW Literacy Night, a visit from Telemundo, and of course, the day-to-day learning that takes place! The opportunities that our students have to engage in various activities and learning is pretty darn awesome and we are incredibly thrilled to watch and support our students thrive.

Telemundo Story on Rose Hill

Last Monday a reporter from Telemundo spent a few hours at Rose Hill with the purpose of highlighting the long-standing (over 30 years!) immersion program. The first grade students and Sra. Cruz did a fantastic job with the interviews and keeping the learning going all the while a reporter was in the classroom. If you would like to see the piece that was aired, click this link. It is better viewed on a mobile device rather than a laptop.

Rose Hill Student Ambassadors

As part of being a Purple Star Designated School, we have initiated a Student Ambassador program. These are military connected kiddos and will facilitate family tours for new to Rose Hill families. When new students start at Rose Hill, the Ambassadors will also help serve as a buddy and help the child learn the ropes of our school, sit with them at lunch, play with them at recess, etc. The goal is to help military families become adjusted to their newest home and make them feel welcome by the Rose Hill community.

Older & Younger Rockets Partnering Up

We are so fortunate to have such a greate grade level span at Rose Hill. We have students as young at 1 1/2 years old that attend and then, of course, we have our 6th grade students. This year, our teachers have been more intentional at finding opportunities to partner up our older and younger Rockets together. Whether it's to read to each other, mentor, help with some learning, and regardless of what it is, both sets of students enjoy the opportunity. We especially find it beneficial for our older students because it is a chance to show their learning, practice patience, and see how they truly are leaders within our building. It is awesome to watch students, who might be a bit nervous, step up to the plate and work with some younger students.

The picture below shows how 3rd grade students worked with Kindergarten students on a Fitness & Nutrition unit. This happened on our recent 2-hour release day and our PE teacher created this opportunity for our students.

In music class, the preschool students were recently learning about strings instruments so the teachers coordinated and opportunity for some 5th graders to come down to their classroom to share how to play their strings instruments and what they sound like. It was so great to watch the students learn from each other!

GLOW Literacy Night

Thank you to the almost 400 families who came to GLOW Literacy Night! It was so much fun watching families participate in the various literacy-related activities. A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Cho, Literacy Resource Teacher; Mrs. Millett, Media Specialist; and Mrs. Pennington, Family Liaison; who worked to coordinate this event and of course, our other team members who stayed to support the various stations. We are looking forward to seeing even more families at the Celebrate Community & Culture Night, Thursday, February 15th.

Dear RHES Families,

We need your help at the February "Friday Popcorn!" event. This event will take place Friday, February 2, 2024 and will supply all staff and 4th grade students with freshly popped popcorn (4th grade lunch period is 11:00 AM - 11:30 PM).

Popcorn Friday is a favorite of RHES staff and students. Please sign up using the below link if you are able to help out.

https://rosehillelementaryschool.ptboard.com/sgnvw

SPECIAL NOTE: We have had some trouble getting enough volunteers for the monthly Friday popcorn events. To help make it easier to volunteer, we have tightened up the shifts to require fewer people. We will also be sending out the remaining Popcorn Friday volunteer sign ups for this school year by the end of this week. We hope this will allow people to plan ahead to help out. Otherwise, we will be forced to examine alternative ideas for a monthly staff treat. In any case, we are committed to having popcorn for the remaining grade levels this year as we don't want any students to miss out. Please stay tuned this week for the March-May Friday Popcorn Sign Up Announcements!

Popcorn Volunteer Duties Include:

  • Helping to pop the popcorn (We will show you how if you haven't done it before!)
  • Placing it into the serving bags, and into a box for holding
  • Handing the bags out to the teachers and staff who come by the assigned room during their lunch break (lunch breaks occur every 30 minutes between 11 am and 2 pm).
  • A delivery of 100 bags of popcorn to the cafeteria for the 4th Grade students at their designated lunch time: 11:00 AM.
  •  When the event ends, cleanup involves packing up leftover supplies, cleaning the popcorn machine, and taking the machine and supplies back to the PTA shed.

3rd Grade Field Trip to the Smithsonian

Friday, January 12th, the 3rd grade students had the opportunity to go to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. This was the first time many of our students had been to a Smithsonian Museum and everyone had a great time! The students were able to explore the various exhibits, have an opportunity for some hands-on experiences, and they all worked to complete their journals that had a few questions in it to help guide their learning. We are thankful that PTA is able to help offset the school bus transportation costs that are associated with field trips.

RHES School Innovation & Improvement Plan

Every school year, FCPS schools are required to create a SIIP (School Innovation & Improvement Plan). The Rose Hill one was created in August by a team of people and it is based on various data points from the previous school year. The RHES plan for this school year has three goals centered on English Language Arts, Math, and Science. Our plan is posted on the RHES website and if you'd like to read more about the specifics, click here.

Indoor Sledding with the Preschool Team

Prior to the snow arriving, our preschool team gave their students an opportunity to go "sledding" indoors. With some tape, paper boxes, scooters, and some creativity, a sled was made and the students were able to experience going "fast" down the little "hill" we have inside the building. Walking through the pod and hearing their giggles was pretty amazing! You can check out the video here. Not only did the students have fun but so did the teachers!

Delayed Schedule Details

Winter is upon us and it is likely that there will likely be more 2-hour delays before spring arrives. As a reminder, when there is a school opening delay, arrival starts at 11:00. Please do not drop students off beforehand, unless they are a patrol. FCPS uses various modalities of notifications to let the community know of a delayed opening, school cancellations, etc. You can follow FCPS on Twitter, check the FCPS website, or more often, you'll receive an e-notify message (which you do not have to sign up for).
