Dear Rose Hill Rocket Families,

It's been a fantastic start to the new school year! We've loved welcoming back our students and families and seeing everyone settle into the routine. The first week back was filled with learning, collaboration, and positive interactions. We're thrilled to witness the friendships being formed and renewed, both old and new. We can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Thank you for your ongoing support. Together, we're creating an amazing learning environment where our students can thrive. Here's to an incredible year ahead!

We are still in need of parent responses to our Early Release Monday survey. If you have not already done so, please fill out this form indicating your preference by September 5th.  The first early release Monday for Rose Hill is Monday, September 16th. We need a response for every student in our building.

Students who will stay at school on early release Mondays will be using our on-line platforms to practice their academic skills. Students will be monitored by the school’s instructional assistant and substitute teachers. No food or snacks will be provided by the school.

Fall Pictures

Strawbridge will be coming to take photos for our Fall Picture Day on Tuesday, September 17th. Say Cheese!

No Toys & Plushies at School

We all love stuffed animals and plushies, but school is not the place for them. They can get dirty, ripped or lost. If your child brings one to school, it must stay in their backpack all day. However, home is the best place to keep them!

Family Life Education: Save the Date

Our FLE Parent information night will be hosted by Clermont Elementary School on the evening of Wednesday, October 23rd. Curriculum information can be found on Schoology.

Teacher Report Week at Rose Hill

Ever wonder what the Rose Hill team is doing during Teacher Report Week? Not only is the team unpacking their classroom items and putting together their classroom but they are doing quite a bit of learning too! We try to make it fun, of course, but this year, with new math standards and a new literacy curriculum, there was a fair amount of learning that needed to take place. In addition, we also do our required health trainings. As you can see from the photos above, the team was engaged and had quite a few laughs!

We'd like to also thank our awesome PTA and Taste of Asia for provided our team a wonderful lunch Monday afternoon. It was incredibly generous of everyone involved to make this happen!

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

With the new school year, comes some tweaks to the arrival and dismisall procedures. Please read this so that you know what to expect for the first day of school.

Arrival

  • All walkers will enter through door 1 (main door). The doors open at 9:00am.
  • All Kiss & Riders must go through the Kiss & Ride line. Do not drop off students on Rose Hill Drive. Please wait for RHES team members to open the car door to let the students out of the car. If you need a Kiss & Ride number, an office team member will be outside in the mornings and afternoons to hand out numbers. All students will enter door 3.

Dismissal

  • All walkers, including Kindergarten students, will dismiss through door 10 (south side of building). Kindergartners must be picked up by someone over 18 years of age. All other students may leave on their own accord. There will be multiple RHES team members at this door to ensure student safety.
  • Kiss & Ride students will be called out by number. Make sure you have your number displayed in the left-hand side of your windshield. If you do not have a Kiss & Ride number, an office team member will be outside this week to provide you with one. All students will exit door 4. It is imperative that drivers are not on their electronic devices and are paying attention to the directions being given by RHES team members.

If there is a change with how your child is going home, please email the child's teacher AND [email protected] by 3:30.

Kindergarten Families

For the first day of school only, parents of Kindergarten students may walk their child to the classroom. At 9:15, our school day does get started so we will ask you to say your good-byes. PTA is hosting a Boo-Hoo/Yahoo! coffe event in the cafeteria at 9:15 for our Kindergarten families. Please join other parents on this special day!

Zones of Regulations at Rose Hill

This year, as part of our Social-Emotional Learning, will will be implementating an evidenced-based curriculum called The Zones of Regulation. These weekly lessons are designed to support our students in identifying emotions and regulating behaviors to match the "Zone" to the environment. Our goal is to create vertical alignment with our verbiage but more importantly, teach our students a life-long set of skills. The Zones of Regulation is not new to Rose Hill as it has been used in pockets but this year, it will be a school-wide implementation.

RHES Administrative Team will make TV Appearance!

Pictured are RHES administrative team, Caylene Miller, Rachal Edwards, and Chrissy Roehm

The RHES administrative team will help NBC4 and Apple Federal Credit Union with their annual School Supply Drive for FCPS. We are slated to be on NBC4 this coming Thursday, August 22nd, during the 6am hour. We are excited to help with this endeavor!

In line with what FCPS is doing, Rose Hill will no longer be posting on X (Twitter) and instead, we'll be posting on our new Instagram account. If you search rosehillelementary, you will find us. Come on over and give us a follow!

It's the New School Uear!

Pictured are the administrative team members, Rachal Edwards, Caylene Miller, and Chrissy Roehm, getting ready to welcome back the students.

It has been a busy summer at Rose Hill with the summer programs and capital improvement projects. We had an oil tank filled in and HVAC work done but the most notable change that you will likely see is in the office.

The custodians have been working incredibly hard to get the building ready for our staff and students. The team has to empty each classroom of furniture, then strip and wax the floors. Once this has been completed, the furniture is then either moved to a new classroom or back to its former space. It's so much work! Then there are the details of cleaning the vents, wiping down each student chair and desk, cleaning the walls of the hallways, and the list of to-dos never end. However, they always do it with a smile. We are so appreciative of our custodial team!

Pictured are Ms. Edwards, Ms. Ernestina, Ms. Isabelle, and Mr. Jose. This was taken just after we moved over 300 boxes of student supplies and we were very sweaty!

Rocket Launch

The Rocket Launch, which the Rose Hill version of an open house is taking place Thursday, August 15th. Students in grades 1-6 are invited to attend anytime between 2:00-3:30. During this time, you'll receive your child's teacher's name and room number. You can drop off your school supplies, meet the teacher, load money into your child's lunch account, etc. We'll also have team members on-hand to help you with any paperwork that needs to be completed online.

Kindergarten students will come at 3:30, when the building is a bit quieter. After seeing the classroom and meeting the teacher, families can enjoy popsicles on the playground and get to know other Kindergarten families.

Three Hour Early Release Dates

This school year FCPS elementary schools will have seven early release Mondays. The goal of these days is to provide elementary teachers with additional time to meet new professional development requirements for the Virginia Literacy Act (27 hours of training) and other planning requirements. Learn more about the plan here.

Rose Hill will have a three hour early release on the following days:

  • September 16th
  • October 21st
  • November 18th
  • February 10th
  • March 10th
  • April 21st
  • May 12th

A survey will be shared shortly with all families about child care needs.

Student Consent Forms

Starting August 1st, Student consent forms currently available on ParentVue will be moved to the Parent Digital Consent System (PDC). Families can log into the PDC using their ParentVue credentials to complete consent forms assigned to their child.  If you have a new ParentVue account, you must wait 24 hours after it is created to use the PDC.

Click here to fill out the forms.

Forms available include:

  • School Counseling Opt-out
  • Digital Resources Consent
  • SEL Screener Opt-Out
  • Family Life Education Opt-out
  • SOL Retest Permission

New Benchmark Curriculum

Pictured above are some of the Rose Hill team members who came in druing their summer break to help unpack and organize the seven palletes of reading materials that were delivered.

As part of our Equitable Access to Literacy plan, FCPS is changing the way we teach reading to our K-6 students! Starting this school year, we will have a new curriculum for Language Arts which will help our students become better readers. Because of this new curriculum, all of our FCPS teachers who help our students learn how to read will have the same high-quality materials and lesson plans. When a student can read well, they do better in all of their classes and are more likely to graduate high school.

Varsity Tutors - Free Tutoring Opportunity

Fairfax County Public Schools is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services, at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. RHES Team attends Equity Symposium

Pictured are Ms. Edwards, principal; Ms. Mistretta, instructional coach; Mrs. Rubertone, classroom teacher; Mrs. Malone, classroom teacher; Mrs. Whitelaw, classroom teacher; and Mrs. Osborne, classroom teacher.

Last Tuesday, a Rose Hill team of educators spent the day at TJHSST at the FCPS Summer Equity Symposium. The theme this year was Creating Connections; Cultivating Capacity. There were several different speakers that engaged the team in their thinking, reflection of practices, and how we can take our learning and put it into practice. It was inspirational and very moving. This is a yearly event that we choose to participate in because the topics are near and dear to the Rose Hill mission and values.

RHES PTA Announces New Officers

Officers for RHES PTA have been announced for the 2024-2025 school year. The officers are:

President: Dianna Lopez

Treasurer: Jennifer Olin

Secretary: Ashley Burris

We thank our 2023-2024 Board members, Jamie Carfang, Sean Kolaskar, Sara Duckery, and Dianna Lopez for their service, and welcome the new officers. PTA Membership for the 2024-2025 school year will be available for purchase in August!

Phase 1 Office Upgrade is Completed

The photos you see above shows the current state of the Rose Hill main office. Last week, the team made quick work of the asbestos abatement, which was phase one of this project. This week, a new team will come in, skim the floors to make them level and begin laying the flooring. The new tiles and carpet will go a long way to updating the office. The project came to fruition after a year and a half of advocating by Ms. Edwards, principal, and getting it on the capital improvement list.

As a reminder, Ms. Edwards and Mrs. Layton are the only two RHES team members working this summer. While the office is being renovated, they are working from classrooms and do not have access to the phones or doorbell. If you need to contact them, the best way to do it is either through email ([email protected] or [email protected]) or Talking Points. It will be another 2-3 weeks before the office renovation is complete.

Upcoming Events
  • Thursday, August 15 - Rocket Launch (Open House)
    • 2:00-3:30 for Grades 1-6 Families

    • 3:30-4:00 for Preschool & Kindergarten Families

Field Day Fun!

We had such a beautiful, albiet a bit warm, day for Field Day 2024! The students had so much fun go through all of the stations both inside and outside of the school. The parent volunteers were amazing, cheering on the students, participating alongside the students, and helping out in all aspects. The school ice machine broke a few weeks ago and while we have one on order, it has not yet made it to school so PTA stepped in to purchase large amounts of ice for us. Thank you!!! Our specialists team, led by PE teachers, Mrs. Peevy, Mrs. Atoum, and Ms. Martel are intregal in making this event happen and they deserve special kuddos as well!

It's going to be a busy summer at RHES!

This summer is going to be a busy one at Rose Hill! The school is hosting five summer programs which will have between 600-700 students in the building on a daily basis. In addition to the summer student programs, we will be undergoing four major capital improvement projects, one which will start this Saturday.

  1. Outdoor security cameras installation, more information is below.
  2. Fine-tuning the HVAC -- This is something that has been being worked on all year and continues to be a challenge because we are an older building. The contractors hope to help make the HVAC systems work in a more consisten and efficient manner.
  3. Removal of underground oil tank -- There is an oil tank located by door 3 (it's under the slab of concrete between the gym and door 2) which will be removed the first of July. This project will be about a week long but does require a crane to come in and lift the oil tank out of the ground.
  4. Office Upgrade - Starting Saturday, the main office will undergo a small upgrade which will include the replacement of the carpet and tile. There will also be asbestos abatement. In addition, the small bits of carpet located through the hallways and door entries will also be upgraded.
Installation of Outdoor Security Cameras

Through a grant, FCPS is installing 31 outdoor security cameras in various locations along the main building and mod at Rose Hill. The work started a few weeks with the running of wires inside the building and you can see the installation of the actual cameras happening when you come to school. It is anticipated that this project with will be finished and fully operational by mid-July. We are appreciative of this as the Rose Hill building and grounds have a high level of community use.

INOVA Cares Pediatric Health Fair

There are a few summer health clinics that Inova will be hosting. These clinics are for Medicaid or Uninsured Children only. Here is a flyer with more information. Clinics will be held on a Saturday from 9am-1pm and no appointments are required.

Tuesday evening, Rose Hill celebrated the Preschool students with an end-of-the year celebration. The students sang songs, then the kiddos being promoted to Kindergarten were celebrated. Afterwards, families went outside for a picnic and to play on the playground. It was so much fun celebrating all of the learning that was accomplished this year!

Looking for a Summer Camp?

The FCPS Family Resource Center has compiled information on summer camps including local options, camps for students with special needs (sorted by need), and camps for students experiencing grief or who have parents in the military.

Upcoming Events
  • Tuesday, June 11 - 6th Grade Promotion, 10am, gym
  • Wednesday, June 12 - Early release, 2:00pm, Last Day of School!

Rose Hill Students display Orginal Artwork in local Art Gallery

Two weeks ago, several of our students had their art work on display at the Nepenthe Gallery located in Fort Hunt. Mr. Irby has been hosting an Art Club for most of the year and once a week, students stay after school to learn various art types, refine their techniques, and work on projects. It’s been a great avenue of expression for many students! Thank you also goes to Kate Pennington, our Familiy Liaison, for coordinating the show with the gallery.

New Assistant Principal Coming to Rose Hill

Current Assistant Principal Mike Staroscik will be leaving Rose Hill after this school year. Mr. Staroscik will be an ESOL Educational Specialist and will continue to support schools and teachers within Fairfax County.

No Parking on Rose Hill Drive

There has been a significant uptick in the amount of cars that are parking on Rose Hill Drive before and after school. This simply is not allowed. When you do this, you are creating a major safety hazard for cyclists, public transportation is not able to access their stops, and when students are crossing the road outside of a crosswalk, the danger increases that much more. You may either park in the neighborhood or go through the Kiss & Ride line. Please stop parking on Rose Hill Drive.
