Dear Rose Hill Families,

Recently, a new program has been purchased by FCPS for all schools to help parents and staff monitor the websites students are browsing during lessons within the school day when laptops are being used. This internet content filtering services is called Lightspeed.

In the spirit of always wanting to maximize transparency for you, and safety for your children, I want to share with you that any parent or guardian interested in knowing more about their child’s internet browsing activity on an FCPS device can sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed at no cost. This report will provide a list of the top sites your child visited that week.

Additionally, the weekly Parent Report offers you the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through this portal, you may pause your child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Ms. Edwards, Mr. Staroscik, and Mrs. Miller

We are thankful for YOU!

Thank you to everyone who came to each lunch with their kiddos during the Harvest Luncheon. The kids were bubbling with anticipation of this special day and the smile on their faces made it worth it. We know it can be challenging to find time to come to school in the middle of the day and know that your students absolutely enjoyed seeing and getting to eat lunch with you. ❤️

The Fun Run...Oh My!

The Rose Hill community is AWESOME! This year, in a mere few weeks, $21,385 was raised by our school families. Wow! Wow! Wow! We will be using this money to continue to replace furniture throughout the school. Much of the furniture is old, broken, or cracking, so it's important to continue to upgrade it. This includes teacher chairs, bookcases, and stools for the art rooms.

The Fun Run also was a great opportunity for the students to get outside and burn off some energy. Thank you to the parents who volunteered, brought bottles of water, and to our incredible PTA for organizing this event. Mrs. Miller, our Assistant Principal, as well as our specialist team members, and Mr. Jose, our Assistant Building Supervisor, were setting tables, the PA system, signs, and everything else very early Friday morning to help make sure the event went off without a hitch. We have the best team!

Pictured above is Mrs. Miller, Assistant Principal, and Ms. Edwards, Principal, threw confetti and spread joy to Ms.Tlatelpa's Kindergarten students for being the classroom who raised the most money with $3,660. They have earned a pizza party and extra recess. Congratulations!!

Have you ever wanted to express your appreciation to your child's teacher but you're not sure what to get them besides a mug with an apple on it? A parent suggested to the administrative team that maybe we have our team share what their favorite things are and then we can share that out to student families. What a great idea! If a teacher wanted to participate, they shared their favorite things, even some have an Amazon wishlist, and you can look at it here. It is organized in ABC order by the teacher's first name. If you are not sure who works with your child, let one of the administrative team members know and we can help you out.

Veteran's Day Celebration

As part of being a Purple Star Designated School, it was important for our school community to celebrate Veterans. Mrs. Pennington, Family Liaison, and Ms. Spangler, Kindergarten Teacher, spearheaded this effort and they did a fantastic job. Despite it being a rainy, cold day, the Rose Hill patrols helped to put flags out in front of the school building. We also welcomed several Veterans to read and share stories with our students. It was a great day celebrating those who have served our country!

Advanced Academics Referral Deadline is Upcoming

If you were not able to attend the AAP Application Process information session faciltated by Ms. Edwards, Principal, and Mrs. Freeman, AART, the evening of November 15th, that's quite ok. All of the information you need can be found on the FCPS AAP webpage. Scroll down to the header Understanding the AAP Screening Process and you will see the referral forms, which are in multiple languages. The deadline for all referral forms to be submitted is Friday, December 15th. There is no wiggle-room with this deadline so please ensure it is on your calendar. If you have questions or need help with the application process, contact Mrs. Eileen Freeman, AART, at [email protected].

Girls on the Run Season Ends

This was the first year Rose Hill has had a Girls on the Run program and they just wrapped up their season by running a 5K. In addition to training for the race, the girls also learned about self care, self confidence, standing up for friends, and finding joy. They also did a community service project where they filled the community food pantry, which is between the Kiss & Ride entrance and exit. We have Mrs. Burris, Rose Hill parent, for bringing this opportunity to our community. She has served as their coach and we are so grateful of her!

The Book Fair is Coming!

The Rose Hill Book Fair will be held in the school library December 4-8, 2023. This event is a great opportunity for your student(s) to explore new titles and let you know what captures their interest. It can also be a great opportunity for a little holiday shopping as books make wonderful gifts!

To help make the event a success, our School Librarian, Ms. Millett, is in need of some volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering at the Book Fair, please click the sign-up link below to view the available time slots for each day. Volunteers will receive a 20% discount on their Book Fair purchases.

Please note that on Monday, December 4th, the Book Fair will be open for parents/guardians to enter the school library and browse/shop from 4:30-5:30 PM. (This is the only time parents and guardians who are not volunteering at the book fair will be allowed to enter.) This same evening, a chorus concert will take place at RHES, so you can buys some books, then stay to watch the concert at 6:00 PM.

We hope your students enjoy the book fair, and if you are able to volunteer, sign-up here.

Lost & Found

The lost & found is growing so if your kiddo is missing something, please encourage them to check it out. With the cooler weather, we have seen an uptick in sweatshirts, jackets, hats, and gloves. It helps tremendously if clothing, lunchboxes, and water bottles have the child's name on them because we are able to return them almost immediately. You can use stickers like this if you'd like. For sanitary reasons, we don't keep lunchboxes or water bottles for very long.

A message from our Pyramid's Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist, Shawn Elliott.

Click here for some information regarding Alcohol & the Holidays that Mr. Elliott asked us to share.

Rose Hill Families,

As we get ready to embark on fall break, this is a reminder that there is no school Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of this week. We are encouraging our Rose Hill team to disconnect from school and spend time with their family and friends. If you send an email, please know that a team member will respond to it within 48 hours upon their return Monday.

Safety is paramount and below are a few reminders to help ensure students and adults are safe during arrival/dismissal.

  • If you are parking at the library to pick-up/drop-off your student, please use the crosswalks and keep your child(ren) alongside you.
  • Adults picking up Kindergarten students, as you exit the cafeteria, please walk close to the building and on the left side of the yellow line. Please remember to also use the crosswalks and keep your students with you rather than having them run ahead.

We appreciate everyone's help with this. Have a wonderful few days off!

Rose Hill Becomes a Purple Star School!

Rachal Edwards, Principal, and Kate Pennington, Family Liaison, attended the school board meeting where they recognized for helping Rose Hill receive the Purple Star designation.

The Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children recently recognized eighteen Fairfax County public schools as 2023 Purple Star Schools and Rose Hill is one of them!

The Purple Star designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families.

The Purple Star Schools designation has been awarded annually since 2018. Schools earning the Purple Star must have a staff member designated as a point of contact for military students and families, providing professional learning, resources and programming on issues important to military families and have an active peer-led transition team to welcome new students from military families. At FCPS, the peer-led transition teams are student ambassadors that support military students' transition to school.

Rose Hill is proud to now say that they are a Purple Star designated school!

PTA Annual Fun Run Fundraiser

This picture is from last year when the overall goal of the Fun Run was met and the principals got slimed!! Let's do it again this year!

We have already hit the $5000 goal!!!

We want to let you know that on Friday, November 17, 2023, RHES students will be participating in the RHES Fall Fun Run!

If you have never heard of a Fun Run, that's okay! It is an entertaining and healthy way for kids and families to help raise money for the school and student activities, such as:

  • Purchasing new furniture needed in the classrooms like teacher chairs and bookshelves
  • School activities for kids and families

In past years, the RHES Fun Run has raised between $12,000-$20,000 for the school. This year, our goal is to raise at least $15,000. (Last year, we beat our goal and raised $20,000!)

All students can participate, BUT, they must be registered by a parent/guardian. To register your student, and begin requesting donations from family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, local businesses, etc., please:

  1. Go to mybooster.com and click "Sign Up". Then, follow the prompts to register your student(s)
  2. Share the student's fundraising page link with family, friends, etc. using the "Share" button
  3. Check your student's fundraising page frequently to track their progress

Donors will be able to make a flat donation in support of the student that is 100% tax deductible. If any donors are unable to make donations online, the student can collect cash or checks along with the donor name, address, and phone number. That money and information can be placed in an envelope labeled "For PTA for Fun Run" and taken to the front office. Checks should be made payable to "Rose Hill Elem PTA". These donations will be credited toward the student's fundraising total.

Class prizes will be awarded after the Fall Fun Run day:

  • The class in each grade that raises the most money will win an EXTRA RECESS PARTY!
  • The class that raises the most money overall will win an EXTRA RECESS PARTY plus PIZZA (provided by PTA)!

School-wide prizes will also be awarded after the Fall Fun Run day:

  • If we raise $5,000, the Principal and Associate Principals will wear funny costumes. (We have already hit this goal! Woo Hoo!)
  • If we raise $10,000, all students will get an ice cream treat!
  • If we raise $15,000 or more, the Principal and Associate Principals will be "Ice Cream Sundaed" at a fun school assembly.

The day of the Fall Fun Run, students should wear sneakers, comfortable bottoms, and either their RHES spirit wear, or the school colors (red and blue).

If you have any questions, please send a message to: [email protected].

We thank you for your support of your student(s) and our school! Together, we can get to that $15,000 goal!

Rose Hill Teachers are always Learning

5th grade teachers, Mrs. Foster and Mrs. Perozze (not pictured, Mrs. Rieger) are working through an erosion experiment for an upcoming science unit.

Rose Hill teachers come together at least twice a week in their grade level teams to talk through the curriculum, look through data, and are always learning. What you see above is the 5th grade team going through the motions of the science experiment that the students are going to do on erosion. The purpose of them actually doing it is it allows the teachers to see where the challenges might be for the students, come up with high-order questions they might ask the students to engage their thinking, and simply to talk through the steps of the experiment to it is conducted correctly. This is time that is highly valuable and ensures that our teachers are always ready to put their best foot forward for the students!

Family members are invited to eat lunch with their student(s) on November 15th. Visitors should plan to bring their own lunch. Because of staffing and supply chain challenges, visitors will not have the option of purchasing a school lunch. Below is the lunch schedule for the grade levels. We look forward to having a lunch with our Rose Hill families!

Edison & Hayfield Pyramid Strings Concerts

Pictured above is Ms. Edwards, Principal, with two RHES strings players.

Rose Hill strings students participated in the Hayfield and Edison Pyramid Concerts this past week. These kiddos had back-to-back performances where they were able to dress up in costumes and play a few pieces of music with the middle school and high school students. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Rockets to see where music can take them! Thank you to Mrs. Babb, the Rose Hill strings teacher, and parents for supporting our students with this opportunity.

RHES AAP Expansion Information

Starting next year, Rose Hill will become a local full-time AAP provider. This continuum of services will begin with the rising 3rd grade class (current 2nd graders) meaning that if a student is eligible to receive advanced academic services, they can do that at Rose Hill and no longer need to go to a center. This is especially helpful for students who are in the immersion program.

In previous years, parents would have to make the decision to either leave the immersion program and go to an AAP center to receive full-time advanced academic services or stay at Rose Hill and not get those services. While it is still an option for families to go to an AAP center if they'd like, it's nice knowing that staying at Rose Hill is going to be an option too.

The expansion of services will start next year at 3rd grade and scale-up every year after so that by the 2027-2028 school year, grades 3, 4, 5, & 6 will be offering Level IV services. If you have questions about this, you can contact either Ms. Edwards, Principal, or Mrs. Freeman, Advanced Academics Resource Teacher.

Book Character Day!

1st grade team as characters from Harry Potter

So many teachers, teams, and students dressed up as their favorite book characters. It was quite a bit of fun listening to the students explain to their friends what their costume was and the book it was tied too. At Rose Hill, we encourage our students to work hard to learn but we also take time to have fun! This is a great example of doing just that!

AAP Application Process Informational Meeting

Bike, Ride, and Roll Day at Rose Hill!

It was so much fun walking many of our students bike, roll, or walk to school Wednesday, October 4th to celebrate this day of getting a bit of exercise rather than riding in the car or bus. We owe our families a huge thank you for supporting this event! Many parents were seen carrying or walking the bikes back home after the morning school bell rang. The kids have so much joy when they arrive and even seeing their younger siblings participate is just so much fun! Our FCPD partners also need to be thanked for taking the time to escort our riders as they were on Rose Hill Drive to help ensure safety. We are looking forward to doing again in the spring!

Book Character Day

If students would like, they may dress up as their favorite book character Friday, October 27th. We are encouraging our teacher teams to do it as well so it should be a fun day! Some ideas would be Harry Potter, Dr. Seuss, Pippi Longstocking, or Paddington; and of course there are so many more ideas out there. Guidelines are:

  • No masks, meaning faces cannot be covered
  • Costume needs to be related to a book character
  • No real or fake weapons, guns, swords, or knives (even if they are plastic or made from foam, they will not be allowed)
  • Proper footwear needs to be worn, no high-heels or slippers

If you have questions, please contact your child's classroom teacher.

Digital Consent - Action Needed

In the last four weeks, we have increased the number of digital consents from 13% to 21%. Thank you to those who have done this already and if you haven't done it yet, please do. It is required for each student. You can read about it here as well as give consent. You do need your SIS Parent VUE Username and Password. Please take a few minutes to complete this. We appreciate it!

11:00-11:30 - Grade 4
11:30-12:00 - Grade 5 & 6
12:00-12:30 - Kindergarten
12:30-1:00 - Grade 2
1:00-1:30 - Grade 1
1:30-2:00 - Grade 3

Attached are the invitiations both in English and Spanish.

Talking Points Messaging

The Rose Hill team uses Talking Points regularly to communicate directly with families. It's quick and allows users to send photos, short messages, and you can even use an app, which allows for a more seamless experience. The benefit of Talking Points is you can type and receive your messages in any language you choose! If you have not done so already, we would encourage families to download the app. Attached is a flyer with more information.

Rose Hill Health Fair was a Success!

Last Saturday, Rose Hill held a health fair for the neighborhood and it was well attended. Dental cleanings, vaccines, neighborhood health resources, and many more things were offered! This was our first time doing an event like this and we will be definitely doing it again! Many thanks to Family Liaison Kate Pennington and Social Worker Allison DeGregorio (both in the last picture with Principal Rachal Edwards) who coordinated the event. We also appreciate the community partner who came on a rainy Saturday to support our families.

Federal Impact Aid Survey

This year, families will have access to the Federal Impact Aid Survey in electronic format via ParentVUE. Our IT teams have worked with the Online Registration System to help digitize the Impact Aid Survey. All parents with a ParentVUE account will be able to complete the survey online using their computer at home. For families unable to complete the survey on-line, a paper form will be available October 31st. Also, families who do not complete the online application by the requisite deadline will be provided with a printed survey form. We strongly encourage families to fill out the online forms to reduce the paper form management. October 16th is when the Federal Impact Aid Survey in ParentVue will open.

We have an Awesome Community!

Pictured above are Erin Monahan, School Counselor; Rachal Edwards, Principal; and Susan Mertz

Rose Hill is incredibly fortunate to have several organizations and churches that provide support for our school community in several ways. Recently, Susan Mertz, from the Fulcrum Properties Group, donated some much needed school supplies. Everything from backbacks, notebooks, crayons, and markers were put into the hands of our students and we are so grateful for this support! Thank you to Mrs. Mertz and her team!

Back to School Night

Back to School Night will be held Wednesday, September 13th. This event provides an opportunity for families to learn more about the instructional curriculum, how their child’s classroom functions, and more! There will be two presentations, the first one from 6:05-6:45 and the second session from 6:50-7:30. This will allow families with more than one child to attend at least two sessions. If you have one student, you can choose to go to either session that works best with your family schedule but you do not have to go to both sessions.

Kiss & Ride Information

The Rose Hill Kiss & Ride line is one of the largest ones in the region and we appreciate everyone’s patience as everyone learns the system. We wanted to share a few reminders:

  • Please remain in your vehicle. The team will assist with getting your student in and out of the car.
  • We do our best to buckle the children into their car seats appropriately. We do encourage parents to double-check to ensure safety and if you need make changes, please pull off to the side as to no hold up the line. Let a team member know and we can guide you to a parking space.
Headphones

We are a 1-1 laptop school which means that all students in grades 1-6 receive a laptop to use throughout the year. Our younger Rockets receive iPads. No matter what grade the students are in, they need to have headphones. Over-the-ear or in-ear ones, it doesn’t matter but more importantly, they need to plug into the computer, they cannot be bluetooth enabled. Please check with your student(s) to ensure that they have headphones and if not, please send a pair in for them.

PTA Restaurant Night

Join us Thursday, September 14th, at Hangry Burger for the PTA restaurant night. A portion of all in-store orders placed on that date between the hours of 4-8 pm will be donated to Rose Hill. Hangry Burger is located at 6699 Frontier Drive in Springfield.

Spirit Wear

Rose Hill spirit wear can be purchased at any time throughout the school year through 1st Place Spiritwear. They are currently doing a 30% off promotion and free shipping for orders for $75. If you need to update your family’s spirit wear, now is the time to do it!

Welcome Back!

It was a fantastic feeling having the school building come back to life as the teachers and staff returned. During this past week, for the Rose Hill team, it is a combination of professional learning, decorating and setting up classrooms and shared spaces, learning about our school goals and next steps, and then infusing some fun into it as well.

Very early Wednesday morning, the administrative team along with Kate Pennington, Family Liaison, and Dr. Grace Taylor, Interim Assistant Superintendent, had a spot on NBC4 along with Apple Federal Credit Union, to encourage the DMV area to donate school supplies. Rose Hill was fortunate to also be the recipient of some of the donations.

The majority of the teachers participated in the Science of Reading professional learning that was held at Fairfax High School one day last week. We were fortunate enough that our Instructional Coach, Ashley Mistretta, and Reading Specialist, Elizabeth Cho, were selected by the county to help facilitate the entire day of professional learning.

It was also important that we spent some time working as a Rose Hill team learning about our School Improvement & Innovation Plan, which drives our goals, as well as establish their own team goals. We worked on learning about the school-wide behavior expectations, academic and instructional next steps, and getting to know our new team members. Below, ECCB teacher Ed Windhausen, and AART Teacher, Eileen Freeman, work with their team on a Looks Like/Sounds Like chart.

Throughout the week, it's also important to us that we infuse some opportunities to show how muh we appreciate our team and have some fun. Our awesome PTA provided a delicious grab & go lunch Thursday to the entire staff. Thank you to PTA for making that happen. The team really appreciated it! And then to provide some laughs as well as an opportunity to review our Flight Plan, school principal Ms. Edwards, hosted the Family Feud. She even dressed up to do it!

First Day of School

The first day of school is tomorrow. As a reminder, our doors open at 9am and the tardy bell rings at 9:15am. It will take some time for everyone to get into the swing of things so please be patient with the bus drivers, office team, and Kiss & Ride team. We encourage all students that tomorrow, they take the mode of transportation that they will usually take. This help with the transition for the students.

For our Kindergarten families only, you may walk your student down to their classroom tomorrow if you'd like. If your child is a bus rider, put them on the bus then meet them just outside door 1 as they disembark from the bus. At 9:15, PTA is hosting a Boo Hoo Coffee for Kindergarten parents in the libary.

Rose Hill Spiritwear

We love wearing our Rose Hill Spiritwear on Fridays and encourage students to join us! 1st Place Spiritwear is having a 30% off sitewide sale and free shipping over $75. Their quality is fantastic and there are so many options. You can check them out here.

Back to School Night

Mark you calendars for Wednesday, September 13th, at 6:00pm for Back-to-School Night. During this event, we welcome families back into the school house to learn from their child's teacher more about the curriculum, SIIP, and all the other things related to school. Please plan to join us!

AAP Overview for Families

Are you interested in learning more about Advanced Academics (AAP) at Rose Hill? Please join Eileen Freeman, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART) to learn more about what AAP services are available for your students this school year and throughout their time in FCPS at our Family Overview Night! Rose Hill’s AAP Family Overview Night will be held on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023 from 6:00-6:30 PM on Zoom. The session will also be recorded and shared with families if you are unable to join us live. If you have any questions, please contact Eileen Freeman at [email protected] .

Join the RHES PTA

The Rose Hill PTA is a terrific organization that supports our students and teachers. Even if you aren't able to attend the meetings, there are so many other ways to contribute. We are encouraging all of our families to join. Go to this link and then click "Sign Up" if you don't already have an account. Membership for a parent is $10.61 and for a family it is $15.76.
