Flexibility was the name of the game today!

We are so proud of how flexible our students were to the changes that were made today for the Fun Run. Our PTA volunteers and staff worked tirelessly all day to make it a memorable experience for all students. As our earlier message noted, for safety reasons we switched to a dance-a-thon party this morning for our preschool-3rd grades. As the weather improved, we kept an eye on the field and decided conditions had changed and we were able to have our 4th-6th grades do the Fun Run outside. It was a great day of fun, laughter and movement!

Character Day at Rose Hill!

So much fun was had by staff and students at Thursday's Book Character Day! Thank you to everyone who participated. Pictured above are our teaching teams and their costumes. They definitely went all out!

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

Hayfield Pyramid Strings Concert

Over 20 students represented Rose Hill at Wednesday evenings Hayfield Pyramid strings concert. The students joined over 100 other elementary students from throughout the pyramid. Together, they learned a song and then performed it together. They even dressed up in costumes! Thank you to Mrs. Babb, our strings teacher, for supporting our students in this endeavor.

Rose Hill Stellar Squads

This past month, Rose Hill initiated Stellar Squads. Stellar Squads are classrooms that are partnered together, usually an upper grade with a lower grade, and for about an hour, they have an opportunity to connect. The goal is for the older students to see how important their role is an older Rocket and to model the Rose Hill expectations, feel good about helping younger Rockets, and to hopefully, through the course of the year, develop strong relationships. The same squads are partnered throughout the year and will get together once a month. Be sure to ask your student about their Stellar Squad experience that took place Thursday afternoon!

Upcoming Events
  • Monday, 11/04 - School Planning Day, No School
  • Monday, 11/04 - Deadline to nominate a Rose Hill team member for an Outstanding Employee Award

RHES Book Character Day!

Book Character Day will be held Thursday, October 31st. Rose Hill teams do a wonderful job choosing themes such as the 101 Dalmations and we want the students to join us!

Students may dress up as their favorite book character for the day. It is important to note that anything that looks like a weapon, such as a sword, gun, bow & arrow (even if they are made from plastic or foam), should not be brought to school. You may also want to consider packing an extra pair of shoes or clothes for your kiddos should their costume get uncomfortable during the day.

This is such a fun day and we also want to keep everyone safe. If you have questions, contact your child's teacher.

The Rose Hill garden continues to produce a variety of vegetables. Earlier this week, Ms. Edwards picked cherry tomatoes and hot peppers (which are super hot!). Rose Hill 2024 Health and Wellness Expo

The Health and Wellness Expo was a huge success! Thanks to Kate Pennington our family liaison and Allison DeGregorio our school social worker for putting on such a great event!

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your family's health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. Be wise and immunize!

Free Immunizations for All FCPS Students

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations at Frost Middle School for all FCPS students at no cost on:

  • Tuesday, October 8,  3-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic.

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

🎤 Our Schools, Our Future: Register Today for a Community Conversation!

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will host a series of Community Conversations this fall. She invites you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Click the dates below to register for any of the following conversations:

Events take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Childcare and language interpretation services will be provided.

Kiss & Ride Updates

We will be introducing a new method of Kiss & Ride number tags next week. See image below:

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent.  Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school.  Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by email to [email protected].

Gun Safety and Safe Gun Storage

Providing students and staff with a safe educational environment remains our priority. Sadly, gun violence continues to impact schools and communities across our nation.

In FCPS, lessons on gun safety are built into our curriculum. It is critical that parents and guardians talk to their children about the importance of gun safety and safe gun storage in their homes, and in any home they may visit.

The FCPS website has gun safety resources as well as information about safety and security practices at schools. See Dr. Reid’s recent letter to the community for more resources.

Safely Store Firearms and Medications

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board has a limited supply of free locking medication boxes and trigger locks that fit a wide variety of firearms. Visit the Lock and Talk website to learn more.

✨ The 2023-30 Strategic Plan

The 2023-30 strategic plan sets five main goals to create positive change in FCPS. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Each goal has an equity commitment — the promise we make to every student to support them in attaining these goals. Each goal also has several measures that allow us to track our progress.

Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12

The first goal in the strategic plan focuses on each and every student having a strong start in FCPS. Whether they're joining us in preschool or in high school, we want our students to be set up for success. See how Goal 1 is being put into practice

Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, Empowered

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services' updates to lunch menus align with FCPS’ Strategic Plan Goal #2 - Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered. The new menu options reflect the many voices and cultures represented around every FCPS lunch table!

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

As part of the second goal, we want each and every student to feel like they belong and have the support they need to thrive. See how Goal 2 is being put into practice

If you need accessible parking during these times, there are accessible parking spots in the side parking lot directly across from our bus loop/door 1 and door 3  for building access.

Bike Lanes

Thank you for your patience and flexibility during our arrival and dismissal times. As a reminder, please do not park in the bike lanes near our school. This causes traffic congestion and is unsafe for our students and families. This week we will be putting up the orange cones again as a reminder not to park in these areas.

Dear Rose Hill Rocket Families,

It's been a fantastic start to the new school year! We've loved welcoming back our students and families and seeing everyone settle into the routine. The first week back was filled with learning, collaboration, and positive interactions. We're thrilled to witness the friendships being formed and renewed, both old and new. We can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Thank you for your ongoing support. Together, we're creating an amazing learning environment where our students can thrive. Here's to an incredible year ahead!

We are still in need of parent responses to our Early Release Monday survey. If you have not already done so, please fill out this form indicating your preference by September 5th.  The first early release Monday for Rose Hill is Monday, September 16th. We need a response for every student in our building.

Students who will stay at school on early release Mondays will be using our on-line platforms to practice their academic skills. Students will be monitored by the school’s instructional assistant and substitute teachers. No food or snacks will be provided by the school.

Fall Pictures

Strawbridge will be coming to take photos for our Fall Picture Day on Tuesday, September 17th. Say Cheese!

No Toys & Plushies at School

We all love stuffed animals and plushies, but school is not the place for them. They can get dirty, ripped or lost. If your child brings one to school, it must stay in their backpack all day. However, home is the best place to keep them!

Family Life Education: Save the Date

Our FLE Parent information night will be hosted by Clermont Elementary School on the evening of Wednesday, October 23rd. Curriculum information can be found on Schoology.

Teacher Report Week at Rose Hill

Ever wonder what the Rose Hill team is doing during Teacher Report Week? Not only is the team unpacking their classroom items and putting together their classroom but they are doing quite a bit of learning too! We try to make it fun, of course, but this year, with new math standards and a new literacy curriculum, there was a fair amount of learning that needed to take place. In addition, we also do our required health trainings. As you can see from the photos above, the team was engaged and had quite a few laughs!

We'd like to also thank our awesome PTA and Taste of Asia for provided our team a wonderful lunch Monday afternoon. It was incredibly generous of everyone involved to make this happen!

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

With the new school year, comes some tweaks to the arrival and dismisall procedures. Please read this so that you know what to expect for the first day of school.

Arrival

  • All walkers will enter through door 1 (main door). The doors open at 9:00am.
  • All Kiss & Riders must go through the Kiss & Ride line. Do not drop off students on Rose Hill Drive. Please wait for RHES team members to open the car door to let the students out of the car. If you need a Kiss & Ride number, an office team member will be outside in the mornings and afternoons to hand out numbers. All students will enter door 3.

Dismissal

  • All walkers, including Kindergarten students, will dismiss through door 10 (south side of building). Kindergartners must be picked up by someone over 18 years of age. All other students may leave on their own accord. There will be multiple RHES team members at this door to ensure student safety.
  • Kiss & Ride students will be called out by number. Make sure you have your number displayed in the left-hand side of your windshield. If you do not have a Kiss & Ride number, an office team member will be outside this week to provide you with one. All students will exit door 4. It is imperative that drivers are not on their electronic devices and are paying attention to the directions being given by RHES team members.

If there is a change with how your child is going home, please email the child's teacher AND [email protected] by 3:30.

Kindergarten Families

For the first day of school only, parents of Kindergarten students may walk their child to the classroom. At 9:15, our school day does get started so we will ask you to say your good-byes. PTA is hosting a Boo-Hoo/Yahoo! coffe event in the cafeteria at 9:15 for our Kindergarten families. Please join other parents on this special day!

Zones of Regulations at Rose Hill

This year, as part of our Social-Emotional Learning, will will be implementating an evidenced-based curriculum called The Zones of Regulation. These weekly lessons are designed to support our students in identifying emotions and regulating behaviors to match the "Zone" to the environment. Our goal is to create vertical alignment with our verbiage but more importantly, teach our students a life-long set of skills. The Zones of Regulation is not new to Rose Hill as it has been used in pockets but this year, it will be a school-wide implementation.

RHES Administrative Team will make TV Appearance!

Pictured are RHES administrative team, Caylene Miller, Rachal Edwards, and Chrissy Roehm

The RHES administrative team will help NBC4 and Apple Federal Credit Union with their annual School Supply Drive for FCPS. We are slated to be on NBC4 this coming Thursday, August 22nd, during the 6am hour. We are excited to help with this endeavor!

In line with what FCPS is doing, Rose Hill will no longer be posting on X (Twitter) and instead, we'll be posting on our new Instagram account. If you search rosehillelementary, you will find us. Come on over and give us a follow!

It's the New School Uear!

Pictured are the administrative team members, Rachal Edwards, Caylene Miller, and Chrissy Roehm, getting ready to welcome back the students.

It has been a busy summer at Rose Hill with the summer programs and capital improvement projects. We had an oil tank filled in and HVAC work done but the most notable change that you will likely see is in the office.

The custodians have been working incredibly hard to get the building ready for our staff and students. The team has to empty each classroom of furniture, then strip and wax the floors. Once this has been completed, the furniture is then either moved to a new classroom or back to its former space. It's so much work! Then there are the details of cleaning the vents, wiping down each student chair and desk, cleaning the walls of the hallways, and the list of to-dos never end. However, they always do it with a smile. We are so appreciative of our custodial team!

Pictured are Ms. Edwards, Ms. Ernestina, Ms. Isabelle, and Mr. Jose. This was taken just after we moved over 300 boxes of student supplies and we were very sweaty!

Rocket Launch

The Rocket Launch, which the Rose Hill version of an open house is taking place Thursday, August 15th. Students in grades 1-6 are invited to attend anytime between 2:00-3:30. During this time, you'll receive your child's teacher's name and room number. You can drop off your school supplies, meet the teacher, load money into your child's lunch account, etc. We'll also have team members on-hand to help you with any paperwork that needs to be completed online.

Kindergarten students will come at 3:30, when the building is a bit quieter. After seeing the classroom and meeting the teacher, families can enjoy popsicles on the playground and get to know other Kindergarten families.

Three Hour Early Release Dates

This school year FCPS elementary schools will have seven early release Mondays. The goal of these days is to provide elementary teachers with additional time to meet new professional development requirements for the Virginia Literacy Act (27 hours of training) and other planning requirements. Learn more about the plan here.

Rose Hill will have a three hour early release on the following days:

  • September 16th
  • October 21st
  • November 18th
  • February 10th
  • March 10th
  • April 21st
  • May 12th

A survey will be shared shortly with all families about child care needs.

Student Consent Forms

Starting August 1st, Student consent forms currently available on ParentVue will be moved to the Parent Digital Consent System (PDC). Families can log into the PDC using their ParentVue credentials to complete consent forms assigned to their child.  If you have a new ParentVue account, you must wait 24 hours after it is created to use the PDC.

Click here to fill out the forms.

Forms available include:

  • School Counseling Opt-out
  • Digital Resources Consent
  • SEL Screener Opt-Out
  • Family Life Education Opt-out
  • SOL Retest Permission
  • Objection to Release of Directory Information to the Public

New Benchmark Curriculum

Pictured above are some of the Rose Hill team members who came in druing their summer break to help unpack and organize the seven palletes of reading materials that were delivered.

As part of our Equitable Access to Literacy plan, FCPS is changing the way we teach reading to our K-6 students! Starting this school year, we will have a new curriculum for Language Arts which will help our students become better readers. Because of this new curriculum, all of our FCPS teachers who help our students learn how to read will have the same high-quality materials and lesson plans. When a student can read well, they do better in all of their classes and are more likely to graduate high school.

Varsity Tutors - Free Tutoring Opportunity

Fairfax County Public Schools is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services, at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.
